My personal testimony usually shocks people. To me, it is just a story. Others let me know they feel touched.
Now, my pastor Derek Turner really knows what it is to lose everything. He lost his wife and unborn child to a drunk driver. Any loss is devastating; under such senseless circumstances, I have no doubt that God alone gave him the means to go on.
Derek had since seen his life restored. Blessed afresh with a wife (Sarah) and two kids, he knew about God's faithfulness. Not in the cookie-cutter, bland my-momma-always-said-that kind of way; I mean really knew it. Like Job did.
Especially in 2009.
On New Year's Day, Sarah was taking their older daughter and her friend to the movies, and Derek received a call that forced him to revisit the horror all over again.
A drunk driver struck the vehicle his wife, child and family friend were driving in. There was a fire. Both cars were totaled. The drunk driver ended up being critically injured.
His family walked away. Sore, scared... but safe. So much so that they were able to pray together at the scene.
I can never understand Derek's strength, but I know its Source. I am so thankful that we are able to share this new chapter of testimony.
What a great God we serve...
